‘Time’ for business

Time.com‘Time Magazine’ has always been at the top of the current events pile of publications. As I was sifting through their website the other day, I found their Business section (http://www.time.com/time/global_business/ireland). But what was interesting about this section was that Ireland was a listed country on its ‘drop down’ menu (along with 9 others including China, the US, UK, India, Brazil, Japan, etc). It struck me that Ireland was put on a par with this other countries in the business sense. The site itself is nicely designed; it has numerous links on the left-hand side that involve Irish business news. It also has maps, weather, a stock ticker among other elements. There is also a ‘comparative chart’ on the bottom-right of the page; this is where you can take Ireland (or other countries) & compare them in a clear graphic way to eachother. The chart compares in terms of:

  • Access to financing
  • Restrictive labor regulations
  • Foreign currency regulations
  • Inadequate supply of infrastructure
  • Inefficient government bureaucracy
  • Inadequately educated workforce
  • Poor work ethic in national labor force
  • Policy instability
  • Government instability/coups
  • Crime and theft
  • Corruption
  • Tax regulations
  • Tax rates
  • Inflation
  • It is based on information from the World Economic Forum. I was pleasently surprised by this website & will be visiting it regularly.

Well, Channel 6 (www.channel6.ie) has launched a publicity campaign (i.e. ads on Channel 6) about its re-vamped & improved website. According to the ads there will be blogs, competitions & other such stuff. The site is aesthetically pleasing alright & does have Channel 6 logoalot of detail about their shows & schedules. However, not all of the blogs are up & running yet-& there seems to be no way for the average user to start a blog comment/discussion thread. But I do get the feeling the website is giving it’s users the ‘not yet, but soon!’ approach. The site has various polls scattered around it; which seem to change depending on where you are on the site. It does market itself as “Ireland’s 1st Broadband TV Website! For Music, Movies and More…..” So far, so good-now show us the ‘more’

    Freedom of anything in Pakistan?

    Pervez Musharraf
Earlier tonight, one of Pakistan’s TV channels was taken off the air “after it allowed two broadcasters who had been banned by the government to appear on air”, according to CNN (http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/02/22/pakistan.tv/index.html). The station was suspended from broadcasting because one journalist made “critical comments…about the president”. Apart from the fact that this impinges on freedom of speech, it is an attack on journalists who speak their mind in a country which is (recently) under such governmental scrutany as Pakistan. However, although the channel itself has been forced to stop transmitting, the website (http://www.aaj.tv/) seems to be running as normal. I have contacted the Pakistani embassy in Dublin tonight seeking clarificaion….but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Ok, TV3 knows the net from May…

Just got back from a visit to TV3 studios & I really enjoyed it. Was interesting, people were really nice…but the studio space itself was REALLY small (abit of a let-down to be honest). Anyway, the head of TV3 Special Programming, Philippe Brodeur, told me that TV3 is planning to launch an on-line alternative to RTE from this summer (presumably around May). Brodeur also said he’s not sure what format the News website will take (based on RTE, MSNBC, CNN, etc); but he did say he particularly likes what NBC Nightly News (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/#23279949) has done-he called it a ’sexy’ website. He also added that he wants to get the news up on the web but is particularly fond of having video content up on the website, since people are now choosing to watch the news online as well as read it. I would definetly agree with that! Well, we’ll see. But whatever happens, we will finally have a full alternative to RTE…& not just on television.

TV3 never heard of the internet

When we think of “Breaking News” in an Irish context, the only real viable options are the interent & radio (to a lesser extent). There is no TV alternative-unless you want to wait hours for the 5:30/6:00 News at which time the information would be well out-of-date! The first websites that come to my mind in a Breaking News context are BreakingNews.ie (www.breakingnews.ie) & RTE News (www.rte.ie/news). One Irish website which has nothing to offer us in a news (or any other) context is TV3 (www.tv3.ie)…. what a joke! Since it is the only real TV news alternative to RTE, I really think TV3 should have a news section on its website; especially since the TV3 team go out & get the news anyway. You may aswell put it on the net since it’s there & you have it. Time to get with the 21st century….get online!

    Online = Journalists???

    CNN.com logoMSNBC logo

This post follows our last class which was asking “Are online journalists considered real journalists?” Someone made the point that yes they are…but it depends. If the online people are simply ‘re-hasing’ information then they are not; but if they are actually doing their own reporting then they are considered ‘real’ journalists. As I write this I am watching Live coverage from MSNBC.com (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8004316/) about a shooting on an Illinois college campus in the US. I consider these people real journalisits…they are giving me live news right now!

Interestingly enough, CNN.com Live (http://edition.cnn.com/video/) is covering the shooting extensively right now, whereas CNN TV is not; the shooting is simply one story of many in their ’scrolling screen’. So this is again an argument in favour of calling online journalisits ‘real’ journalists.

Now, if you were to ask me “Are the people who simply type the news up on the websites journalists?” I would definetly say no. But since it is the internet feeding me the breaking news right now (albeit in video form) I would have to call these people real. I wonder did any of them take the MAJ in DCU…….

Going into town soon to buy the book for my Irish Politics class, then going to Rueben’s gig in Starbucks on Harcourt Street & then heading to Lochlann’s for dinner & booze. Also gotta do some stuff for Feature Writing & TV Journalism right now, but I think I have that worked out already. Talk again soon! :-)
